Motherhood is …

No one told me what motherhood was truly about until I experienced first hand the TRUE meaning of this job.

Siara, one day you will make the choice to enter the world of motherhood.  Below are some of what motherhood means to me. I hope that you will have the opportunity to tell me if I have gotten it right ….. but for now, all of you that are planning on having children or have children….. here are my thoughts.

Motherhood is …

… is a choice YOU make everyday, to put someone else’s happiness ahead of your own.

… is to teach the hard lessons to do the right things.

is middle of the night wake up calls for a glass of water, a blocked nose or calming a sleep walking child.

… is all of your spending money.

… is not remembering what it’s like to get a full night’s sleep.

… is siblings bickering.

… is children nagging or whining over who started it first.

… is an embarrassingly filthy car that you are even embarrassed to sit in.

… is goodbye to a tidy house.

… is hearing the words “ but why” at least a hundred times a day (and not always having an answer for it).

… is stretch marks, a bigger belly, feet a full size larger than before and larger yet deflated boobs.

… is singing or humming kids favorite songs even when they are not around.

… is feeling uneasy until your children are with you.

… is when your heart bleeds everytime they are hurt or sad.

… is never peeing or showering in peace without someone chatting to you on the other side of the door.

… is using your spit to clean dirty faces.

… is a thankless job.

… is happy sighs.

… is realizing that you are stronger than you think.

… is the moment you pause, look at your children and realise that the only things that really matter in the world are right there in front of you.

… is hearing “Mummy, I love you” for no reason.

… is knowing that they are yours, and worth every sacrifice and sleepless night.

… is pure unconditional love

… is appreciating your own mother (FINALLY).

What is it to you?

  1. A beautiful piece! Your kids are going to treasure this when they are finally old enough to understand.

  2. …using your spit to clean dirty faces. This is one thing I promised I would never do to my kids and now I do too. Poor kids 🙂

    Loved this post Kerina!

  3. Well said! It definitely is the best job ever! You experience the most sorrow with it…but the deepest joy to make up for that sorrow.
